Free Background Checks

Free background checks and Free Criminal Background Checks are far more available nowadays as the demand for the information they claim to provide is steadily rising. Locally as well as nationally, we are all now that much more security conscious and less likely to take chances with people.

But, do free background checks actually give us the information that we really need?

Well, as my mom used to say, ‘You get nothin’ for nothin’ – you should know that by now’, and, in many ways, she was right – as usual.

Let’s say you want to carry out a background check – we’ll leave the possible reasons why until later. You log onto the internet and use your favorite search engine and you find a whole host of sites, all offering to gather the total amount of information you need, free of charge. So off you go.

But don’t be surprised if you don’t get absolutely what you think you’re getting. Here’s for why.

You’re looking, say, for John Smith, and you guess he’s approximately 35 years old. You enter this information into your free background check and you might well receive a mountain of information. You’ll find out where many people called John Smith used to live. You’ll get all the information about every John Smith who has paid taxes, used public utilities, or done anything else that there is a public record available for. If you are really fortunate, you might find out something about your particular John Smith. But what you won’t get is an exact address, or a telephone number. Even if you strike gold and the search locates the John Smith you want to know about, don’t be surprised if the response you receive goes along the lines of, ‘We have lots of information about John Smith – which we will pass on to you if you pay us for it.’ This is a common enough means of tricking people into using allegedly free background checks.
In addition, because companies carrying out these free checks don’t usually update their data bases as often as others – some of whom have daily updates – you could find yourself being given outdated information about John Smith, or missing out on his latest entries.

So why bother to do a background check, then?

Many employers, in the current climate, want to undertake checks on prospective new members of staff. There have been so many examples of people withholding information and falsifying their CVs and letters of application, some potential employers do these checks as a matter of course, especially with posts above a certain level.

Let’s face it, it is now well established that, for example, shops lose more stock through thefts by staff than they do by thefts from shoplifters or robberies. Similarly, companies lose more money to frauds carried out inside the organization than those perpetrated by outsiders. Anything that can help cut down these financial losses is going to be of benefit. As an employer you have a right to know if a potential recruit to your organization has ever been involved with something which could have a detrimental effect. If a person has been convicted of large-scale fraud or embezzlement, you should know before making him or her your company accountant. If a person has a long history of drug-related offenses, you should know before he sits around in your staff rest room at break times.

Now, although my mom also used to say that ‘a leopard can’t change his spots, he’ll always be a leopard’, with people it’s not quite so straightforward. People can sometimes break out of a cycle they’ve been trapped in before. So, it might be, that even with the information you have about somebody, you want to employ them. Fine – but you’re still better off knowing. If John Smith was a heavy drug user 20 years ago but is clean now, he deserves a job as much as anyone – he’s proved he’s got character, after all. But you still need all the information you can lay your hands on in order to be able to protect your company.

It’s not just employers who carry out background checks, though. More and more, ordinary citizens, who are going to rent out a room in their home or who have a daughter who is dating that older man they’ve never seen before, are using background checks to put their minds at ease.

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, it became apparent that many public records were destroyed or lost and people with disturbing criminal records, including sex offenders, were able to disappear from the system. You might want to check that the nice young man offering to teach your child how to play the piano is really who he says he is, as he seems very vague about his past positions and his background. There’s something just not quite right about him. As mom said, ‘It’s better to be safe than sorry.

In that case, what kind of background check should I use?

For the optimum results, when you want your criminal background check undertaken, it’s best to use one of the organizations that private detectives and some police officers utilize. Reputable companies will be completely upfront with you about what they will look for and how they will go about it – for example, many will carry out searches manually, rather than simply type a name into a computer to see what turns up in that. The very best searches will provide you with details about vehicle registration, Social Security numbers, outstanding warrants against your subject, Federal and State tax liens, neighbors, family and friends in addition to any the criminal records they might have. You could even find out about body marks and tattoos!

It’s easy to get carried away with paranoia nowadays and be suspicious of everybody and everything. Nobody wants that. However, a little commonsense – the kind that moms have – tells us that there are times when we do need to be careful and watchful. It’s at times such as those that a criminal background check could be a very useful tool indeed.
